LATEST NEWS from the polythene uk stadium!
07.08.08 THOMMO STUNNER SEES OFF SPORTS!!
A stunning first half strike from Ben Thompson was enough for United to see off a resilient Easington Sports at The Polythene UK Stadium last night.
Thompson hit a crisp first time effort after combining well with Gary Wickens to give United a 1-0 victory in the last game of the pre-season campaign.
United used a total of 18 players on the night and will have been happy to have got a good workout in six days before the FTL Futbol Hellenic Premier League season starts.
05.08.08 UNITED READY TO FINISH THE FRIENDLIES!!
United will round off their pre-season campaign tomorrow night when they face FTL Futbol Hellenic Division One West side Easington Sports at the Polythene UK Stadium (7-45pm)
With the season just a week away it will be the last chance for Andy Lyne to play around with formations and different personnel before the opener at Highworth Town next Tuesday.
Easington will be managed by a familiar face with former United manager Ian Feaver appointed in the summer and he has been busy adding new recruits to his squad.
United who were missing a whole host of players will be boosted by the return of Ben Thompson, Stuart Bridges, Jamie Mills and Kevin Lewis. Both Jimmy Griffin and Harry Burnley came through last night's reserve friendly unscathed and will be available for selection.
There are injury doubts over Dean Moss (calf) and Jon Steedman (groin) whilst midfielder Stuart Douglas remains sidelined.
Also definitely missing are Vinny Byfield, Andy Wallbridge and Christian Perkins who are all unavailable for tomorrow's match.
Admission prices have been cut for tomorrow with the cost being £3 for Adults, £2 for Concessions and Under 16's Free with a paying adult.
The Reserves continued their preparations last night when they drew 2-2 with the first team of Launton Sports with goals from Jon-Paul Hannaway and Harry Burnley.
02.08.08 RICH PICKINGS AT MONEYFIELDS!!
United produced a gritty display to come from behind and win 2-1 at a strong Moneyfields side this afternoon in Portsmouth.
It was The Blanketmen who dominated proceedings for the majority of the game and were very unlucky to be a goal down to a Pabs N'Doye goal just before the half-hour.
Having had a Vinny Byfield goal harshly disallowed United continued to press and their patience was rewarded when Gary Wickens got on the end of a John McMahon cross.
Just thirteen minutes from time and the turnaround was complete when McMahon finished from an acute angle after excellent work by Jon-Paul Mills.
United will complete their pre-season campaign on Wednesday 6th August when they entertain FTL Futbol Hellenic Division One West side Easington Sports at the Polythene UK Stadium with a 7-45pm kick off.
02.08.08 ENGLAND YOUTH STAR SIGNS FOR UNITED!!
Witney United have signed former England Youth international Stuart Bridges on loan from Southern League Premier Division Banbury United for the forthcoming FTL Futbol Hellenic Premier League campaign.
Lyne said “ It is good of Banbury to let him come and I thank Keiren O’Sullivan for his co-operation. Although Stu is very much a Banbury asset and remains so, he will be with us for the foreseeable future as his current work commitments make it virtually impossible for him to give the necessary commitment to Banbury. Everyone is aware of his pedigree in the game, as no one wins 23 caps for their country without having special qualities. I feel that he will give us another dimension with his vision and passing ability.
I now feel that we have assembled the depth and quality of squad I’ve been striving to put together since coming to Witney and given the good fortune that you need, would expect us to make a decent fist of things this season”
Bridges has already appeared in pre-season for United but will be missing for this afternoon's trip to Moneyfields.
01.08.08 SEVERAL MISSING FOR MONEYFIELDS TEST!!
United will be without a host of players as they make the trip to Portsmouth to face Moneyfields tomorrow in their latest pre-season encounter (3-00pm kick off)
Definitely missing through unavailability are Kevin Lewis, Ben Thompson, Christian Perkins, Jamie Mills, Stuart Bridges and Harry Burnley whilst Stuart Douglas is still troubled by his injury.
On the plus side though United do welcome back into the fold Jon-Paul Mills, Vinny Byfield, Jimmy Griffin and Liam Illsley whilst former Reading Academy player Aaron Parfitt will be with the squad also.
It is certain to be another tough test for United as Moneyfields had a decent season last year finishing 7th in the notoriously tough Wessex League and losing out in the League Cup Final.
For all those supporters wishing to travel tomorrow the address of the ground is Moneyfield Sports Ground, Moneyfield Avenue, Copnor, Portsmouth, PO3 6LB.
Meanwhile it has been confirmed that United will have one further pre-season friendly on Wednesday 6th August at Marriotts Stadium when they will entertain FTL Futbol Hellenic Division One West side Easington Sports with a 7-45pm kick off.
26.07.08 uNITED MAKE THE REBELS YELL!!
United overcame searing heat and Southern League opposition this afternoon at The Polythene UK Stadium as they beat Slough Town 2-0.
The Rebels made a decent start to the game but United crept back into it and a powerful header from Lee Henderson six minutes before the break gave The Blanketmen the lead.
The second half was a different story as United dominated and a strike from Kevin Lewis doubled the advantage and only some wayward finishing kept the scoreline down.
26.07.08 fRIENDLIES NEEDED!!
Witney United Reserves are currently seeking pre-season friendlies before the coming campaign in Hellenic Reserve Division Two West.
There was some rumour that the side would not be running by last year's successful manager Neil Lyford will continue to run the side.
All last season's players are welcome along with any new ones and those interested should call Lyford on 07740 030768.
Any teams that are interested in friendlies for either the Reserves or the Under 18's should get in touch with Gary Walter on 07986 032772.
25.07.08 nO REBELS DATE FOR DOUGY!!
United will be without Stuart Douglas and Harry Burnley tomorrow as they continue their pre-season campaign against Southern League side Slough Town at The Polythene UK Stadium (3-00pm).
Burnley is still suffering with a groin strain that has seen him miss the last two matches and Douglas misses out following a poor challenge on him last night against Headington.
Dean Moss is still on holiday so also misses out but their are returns for Andy Wallbridge, Vinny Byfield, Lee Henderson, Jamie Mills and Jon-Paul Mills who all missed the game against Headington.
The test against The Rebels will be a tough one as they look to bounce back following a horror season last year. Only some administrative issues in leagues above them spared the famous club a relegation into Step 6 football and they are keen to ensure that doesnt happen again.
They have moved quickly in the summer to strengthen and have signed Richard Peirson from Didcot Town as well as the Southern League West Division top scorer from last year in Danny Jordan.
Jordan took little time to adjust to his new home as Slough ran out 5-0 winners over Hellenic Division One East side Penn & Tylers Green in their only friendly so far.
This will be the first meeting between the two sides since United's formation.
25.07.08 tHOMMO AT THE DOUBLE AS UNITED PROGRESS!!
A double from substitute Ben Thompson secured United's passage to the semi-final of the Jim Newman Cup as they overcame Headington Amateurs 3-1 at Clanfield last night.
After a goal-less first half United opened the scoring with a powerful header from Gary Wickens and with eight minutes remaining it looked all over as Thompson slotted home.
However the resiliant Amateurs didnt lie down and a goal from Otis Woodward with a minute remaining fired up the contest again before a further strike from Thompson saw United through to a game against Carterton or Letcombe on Thursday 31st July.
The Under 18's lost their first friendly of the season going down 6-2 against Kingstonian with their goals coming from Wood and Hall.
23.07.08 UNITED LOOK TO PASS AMATEURS TEST!!
The games come thick and fast at the moment and United are back in action again tomorrow night when they face Headington Amateurs at Clanfield FC in the Jim Newman Cup 1st Round (7-30pm).
It is the first time United have entered the competition although as Witney Town they used to be a fairly regular feature in the annual tournament.
Amateurs have had a difficult time of things recently but following some off-field changes they are looking to get back amongst the front runners in Hellenic Division One West.
Last season they struggled and finished in the bottom five of the division and will be keen to improve things this time around.
On the team news front United are expected to shuffle the pack a little and both Jamie Mills and Jon-Paul Mills along with Andy Wallbridge have been rested after playing 90 minutes on Monday.
Vinny Byfield also misses out due to work commitments and Harry Burnley wont be risked due to his groin strain. Lee Henderson returns to the squad and Liam Illsley is also poised for his first appearance of the season.
If tomorrow night's game is level after 90 minutes there will be a penalty shoot-out to decide who progresses to the semi-finals. The winners will meet the winners of the Letcombe v Carterton match on Thursday 31st July.
22.07.08 cLINICAL TIGERS KILL OFF UNITED!!
Some clinical finishing from Southern League Premier Division side Gloucester City finally killed off United last night as The Blanketmen went down 5-2.
After grabbing a 17th minute lead with a second goal in as many games from Kevin Lewis the home side hit back with three goals in 18 minutes to lead 3-1 at the interval.
However a stunning half volley from Andrew Styles less than a minute after the restart saw United right back in the game and more than matching their Premier League opponents.
Unitd made a number of changes and in the final 20 minutes conceded two further goals to flatter Gloucester a little and condemn United to their first pre-season defeat.
21.07.08 RETURN OF THE MAC!!
Having been missing since Boxing Day 2007 there will be a welcome return to the squad tonight when John McMahon returns for the trip to The Corinium Stadium (home of Cirencester Town) to face Gloucester City.
Club captain McMahon has been missing following a reckless tackle on him at Carterton in the Boxing Day clash and his return will be welcomed. He will also be joined by Stuart Douglas who missed Saturday's draw with Didcot Town and on-loan goalkeeper Tom Willshere is poised for his debut as well.
Gloucester have of course had their off field problems following the floods of this time last year and are currently ground sharing at Cirencester Town whilst they attempt to solve the ground situation within the city.
This hasnt affected their on field performances however and they were among the front runners in the Southern League Premier Division and will be hoping to go one better this season and push on in to the Conference South/North.
They have also had an unbeaten start to pre-season drawing 1-1 with Cinderford Town and on Saturday they triumphed 3-2 at fellow FTL Futbol Hellenic Premier Division side Pegasus Juniors.
20.07.08 iGNITION TO BACK BURMA APPEAL!!
Ignition, the nightspot based within Witney United Football Club has announced that it is teaming up with the town's local community youth club to host an evening in aid of the Burma Disaster Appeal.
The night will be a night of live music on Sunday 21st September starting at 5-00pm with top local band This is my Ship headlining the evening along with support from Peyote, Static Action and Of Sirens.
One more local band is expected to be added for the evening and youngsters are encouraged to enjoy a great night of live music as well as supporting a great cause.
Venue Manager Bob Haydon was happy to lend his support "It is for a great cause and with the venue we have capable of holding excellent numbers we can maximise the amount we can raise for the charity."
Ignition is hosting many other great nights and for news of more events click here.
19.07.08 UNITED AND DIDCOT SHARE THE SPOILS!!
The action got underway this afternoon as United kicked off their pre-season campaign with a creditable 1-1 draw against Southern League side Didcot Town at The Polythene UK Stadium.
United were more than a match for their higher league oppenents and were unfortunate to be a goal down after Jack King fired home a quick free kick on 14 minutes.
This didnt deter United and they got a well deserved equaliser on 35 minutes when Kevin Lewis was teed up to fire into an empty net and get The Blanketmen off to an unbeaten start.
The Under 18's meanwhile have organised their first friendly of the season which will be played on Wednesday 23rd July when they will entertain Kingstonian at The Polythene UK Stadium.
19.07.08 UNITED TO FACE HIGHWORTH TRIP IN OPENER!!
On the day that United kick off the pre-season campaign the fixtures for the new FTL Futbol Hellenic Premier League for August have been announced.
United have been handed a tricky opening game when they will travel to face rejuvenated Highworth Town on Tuesday 12th August hoping for a repeat of last season's 2-0 victory.
We follow that up a week later when we make the trip to Abingdon United's ground to face newly promoted Old Woodstock Town on the 19th but on the Saturday 23rd there is a real mouthwatering prospect in store as United will entertain title favourites Hungerford Town at the Polythene UK Stadium.
All that is completed in August by the trip on Bank Holiday Monday to face near neighbours Carterton on Monday 25th. Sandwiched in between are possible FA Cup ties and for a full list of fixtures so far click here.
18.07.08 iT'S FOOTBALL TIME AGAIN!!
After weeks of no football it is time to dust down the scarves, clear the throats as United are back in action when they entertain Didcot Town tomorrow. (3-00pm)
Of course one major change will be spotted by most supporters as they enter the ground with the new signage heralding the beginning of our sponsorship deal with Witney company Polythene UK seeing the stadium's name changing to The Polythene UK Stadium.
On the field United will come up against a Didcot side well underway with their pre-season campaign having already met both Cheltenham Town and Reading so in terms of match sharpness are likely to be a yard ahead.
However there is a wave of optimism around United at present and with the signings made by manager Andy Lyne in the summer most supporters are chomping at the bit for the new season to begin.
Tomorrow should see debuts for Andy Wallbridge, Ben Thompson, Lee Henderson and Andrew Styles to name just a few although Dean Moss is unavailable and misses out along with Stuart Douglas, John McMahon and Liam lllsley.
Last season the two sides met at the nPower Loop Stadium when the sides drew 2-2 with The Railwayman equalising in injury time with a very soft penalty.
So get along to the stadium tomorrow and see what the new squad shapes up like in our first test of the Summer with the new season just over 3 weeks away!
11.07.08 ILLSLEY REMAINS WITH THE BLANKETMEN!!
Another of last season's squad has chosen to remain with The Blanketmen for the coming season with the news that young defender Liam Illsley has signed.
The former Aldershot Town youngster had an injury-plagued season last year but has fully recovered and raring to go.
Manager Andy Lyne commented "Liam has been really unlucky with injuries during his time with me at both Oxford City and Witney. He deserves to be fit and successful because he has a great attitude and a lot of unfulfilled potential.
He had a very good grounding as a schoolboy at Reading and Southampton. He is very mobile for a big lad as well as being comfortable on the ball and he is happy to put his foot in when required."
10.07.08 TRIO COMMIT TO UNITED CAUSE!!
United's squad continued to take shape this week as three more players
committed to the cause for the new season with two new faces and one old.
First up was the signing of Dean Moss (left) who signed from Southern League side Abingdon United having previously played in the Hellenic League with Bicester Town, Ardley United and Carterton.
Andy Lyne was happy to get his man and said of the signing "I have been wanting to sign Mossy for sometime now so obviously I am pleased that he has chosen to sign for us now. He is good on the ball, has a great engine but he is also a good character who trains well, applies himself properly and will be a good influence on the younger players"
Following that United confirmed the signature of Andrew Styles (right) from Bicester Town. 19 year old Styles who was previously at AFC Wallingford and before that was on the books of both Oxford United and Swindon Town on their school of excellence programmes.
Again Lyne was happy with his capture "Stylo is tremendously enthusiastic. He is very athletic and gets from box to box exceedingly well. He also has a hell of a shot on him as we can vouch for with his strikes that knocked us out of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup last season!"
It was then the turn of another of last season's squad to put pen to paper for another season with highly popular midfielder Stuart Douglas signing on the dotted line.
"Dougy had an injury interrupted season last year and we missed him and the qualities he brings to the side. He is looking sharp in training and along with John McMahon it's been like signing a new player"
06.07.08 wALLBRIDGE ON WITNEY MOVE!!
Last week saw United clinch the signing of experienced defender Andy Wallbridge from Wantage Town as we continued to build our squad for the new season.
Having been Assistant Manager to Ritchie Bourne it was seen as an astute signing by Andy Lyne to capture the signature of the defender who has plied his trade at Brackley Town and Banbury United to name but a few.
The website was fortunate to catch up with the new signing and find out the ins and outs behind him coming to Witney starting with how did the move from Wantage come about.
"After spending 2 seasons at Wantage Town as Assistant Manager to the very enthusiastic and highly ambitious Ritchie Bourne I felt that while I am still able to I wanted to concentrate on playing and hopefully winning something. I have known Andy Lyne from the past and he will definitely be setting his sights on the top of the league table come the end of the season and I was more than happy to be part of that"
Having played for some of the bigger non-league clubs in the area how big potentially does he feel that United are?
"There is no 2 ways about it, this club has been in the Southern League before and it is surely only a matter of time before it reaches there again. There is no reason why it cant reach the Southern Premier along with the likes of Brackley Town and Banbury United and with that the crowds will also grow"
Andy will replace the recently retired Andy Marriott as United's most experienced defender and does he see part of his role to help develop the youngsters such as Lee Henderson and Dean Smith?
"The younger players such as Dean and Lee and anyone else for that matter are good players in their own right so just playing will help them develop. I would like to think that they may pick up good habits from the likes of myself just as I did from the older players when I was starting out"
Finally having played against United for the last few seasons how good will it be to have the United support on your side and can it work for the opposition.
"There is no doubt having the crowd on your side is an advantage especially away from home and having a good support like we do at Witney that can only be a help. We players need to ensure that we use that to our advantage, the flip side of the coin is that the other teams try and use it as motivation for themselves and as a result treat games against Witney a little bit like a Cup Final"
The website would like to thank Andy Wallbridge for his time and look out for more interviews coming soon!!
05.07.08 FIRST TEAM BACK IN TRAINING!!
No sooner has the final ball been kicked in Euro 2008 and the real work began this week as the Witney United first team squad returned to training.
With a mixture of old and new faces out on the training pitch manager Andy Lyne and his new assistant Howard Cowley put the players through their paces.
For Cowley in particular it was good to be getting on with things as it was his first workout with the players and he was happy with what he saw.
"It was great to meet the majority of the players for the first time, I have to say I was impressed with both their work-rate and their attitude. It was a very positive start to fitness work in preparation for the first friendly against Didcot Town on the 19th"
03.07.08 THOMMO ON HIS UNITED MOVE!!
One of United's first signings of the Summer was striker Ben Thompson who signed from Ridgeons League side Wroxham and would have been an unkown for most people.
The website caught up with Thomo and decided to find out more about the man who spent the earlier part of his career at Norwich City.
After welcoming Thomo to the club we decided to find out what United supporters should be looking out for from him when the action gets underway.
"I would class myself as a player that will always give 100% for the team and will run myself into the ground from the first whistle until the last. That is the mind set I approach every game with and I believe this rubs off on my team mates. Previous managers have commented that I earn my goals which is true of course! I also like to think I create as many goals for others as I score myself and can play as a target man or somebody who can get in behind the opposition defence. The most important thing is I have a winning mentality and thats what its all about"
Being new to the area how much had he seen of United and the Hellenic League and if not what is he expecting.
"No, neither! I have heard nothing but praise for the set-up at United from people I know within the game and they recommended the club. Truthfully I am approaching the season with a completely open mind and just maybe the opposition not knowing my game will give us a slight advantage"
Having spent a number of years at Norwich City and still being only 24 does Thomo still harbour hopes of making it as a full-time pro footballer.
"Attempting to get into the pro game is something I have tried my hand at but I would be stupid if the chance arose again not to grab it with both hands. As a lot of my new team mates who have been in the same position would probably give the same answer. I really enjoy my football at this level which allows me to balance my football around my career. I am always striving to be the best in whatever I do so what will be will be"
Finally did he have any message for the United support as anticipation builds ahead of the new season.
"The first thing Lyner mentioned when we were talking was about how passionate the fans are. Having a big crowd with enthusiastic support can be the difference between winning and losing. It's as important for the fans to have a winning mentality as well as the players. For the opposition coming to our place knowing they are up against 11 players as well as an army of support is crucial. So the message from me is continue to support the team both home and away and make it as intimidating as possible for the visitors for every home game. This could have a massive impact come the end of the season"
Once again the website would like to thank Ben Thompson for his time and we hope to have an interview in the next week or so with new signing Andy Wallbridge.

Witney United have completed the signing of Andy Wallbridge who was player/assistant manager at Wantage Town last season for the forthcoming FTL Futbol Hellenic Premier League campaign.
34 years old Wallbridge is a vastly experienced defender who has also seen service at Banbury Utd, Didcot Town, Oxford City, Marlow, Worcester City, Fulham and Oxford Utd and made 32 appearances for The Alfredians last season notching one goal.
Manager Andy Lyne, said “ Andy is a highly respected figure throughout Oxfordshire non league football. He’s one that rare breed of player who just loves the art of defending. We now have good competition for the shirts across the back line, just as we do in midfield and up top”.
01.07.08 HOME COMFORTS IN THE FA CUP!!
United were handed a home tie today when the draw was made for the early stages of the FA Cup at football's headquarters.
In the Extra Preliminary Round we will face old adversaries Buckingham Town from the United Counties League Division One at the Polythene UK Stadium on Saturday 16th August.
The winners of that tie will again be at home in the Preliminary Round when they will face Southern League West Division side Thatcham Town managed by former Witney Town manager Gary Ackling on Saturday 30th September.
Whoever comes out unscathed from that triangle will face Southern League Premier Division side Swindon Supermarine in the 1st Qualifying Round with again that match due to be at home for the winners.
01.07.08 ISLAND TRIP IN VASE FOR UNITED!!
United will make their first ever footballing trip over the water when they were today drawn away at Newport IOW in the 1st Round Proper of the FA Vase.
Following United's excellent 4th place finish in the league last season United were exempt until the 1st Round and will make the trip on Saturday 4th October.
30.06.08 LOVER-LEE AS HENDERSON SIGNS FOR UNITED!!
Witney United have continued their building for the new season with the capture of the signature of much sought after young defender Lee Henderson who spent last season at Bicester Town.
18 years old Henderson started out with Oxford United but signed for Bicester Town upon his release and made 30 appearances scoring twice for the West Oxfordshire side last season.
Manager Andy Lyne said of the latest signing “ Lee is arguably one of the best young defenders in the county and I know there were a fair few clubs in for him. I did try and sign him last season but fair play to him he showed a great loyalty to Bicester and Manager Tim Fowler”.
Look out for more signing news as the week progresses and also tomorrow for the draws for the early rounds of the FA Cup and the FA Vase.
29.06.08 LYNER IN SEVENTH HEAVEN!!
United's preparations for the new season were given a major boost as Andy Lyne managed to secure the signatures of seven of last year's squad.
On a busy day for the United boss he completed some excellent work with the signatures of Gary Wickens, Harry Burnley, Christian Perkins, Vinny Byfield, Kevin Lewis, Jon Steedman and also John McMahon.
He also managed to capture the signatures of two more new signings who will be announced on the website tomorrow evening.
Lyne said of the days proceedings "It was an excellent days work for us to get these lads on forms and ensures our plans for the new season are running along smoothly."
As well as news of the new signings tomorrow supporters can look forward to an exclusive interview with new signing Ben Thompson this week as he talks about joining United.
26.06.08 NO LUCK WITH HELLENIC CUP DRAWS!!
The draws were today made for the Hellenic Cup competitions and it has to be said United got no luck as they came out of the hat away from home in all three draws.
First up was the Hellenic League Cup where we received a Bye in the Preliminary Round but will travel to the winners of either Wantage Town or Oxford City Nomads in the 1st Round.
Next up was the Floodlit Cup and with the regionalisation being scrapped United again came out with a Bye in the Preliminary Round but perhaps ironically face a long trek to Hereford to face Pegasus Juniors in the 1st Round.
It got no better for the Reserves either who although we got our third bye of the day in the Preliminary Round they were drawn out away from home at Easington Sports whom they met in the same cup last season.
26.06.08 CUP OPPONENTS TO BE REVEALED SOON!!
The arrival of the new season is fast approaching and with it we thought we would let you know of a couple of significant dates to look out for.
First up next Tuesday 1st July we will have the announcement of the FA Vase and FA Cup draws and also the definite of what round we will enter both competitions in.
After that the Hellenic Premier League fixtures tend to be announced in mid-July and again as soon as we have the details we will let you know.
This season the league will kick off in midweek of the week commencing Monday 11th August with the first Saturday fixture reserved for the opening round of the FA Cup.
As always the website will bring all the news as it happens so please ensure you check all through the Summer and why not discuss it on our new improved forum.
24.06.08 BROTHERS IN ARMS AS JAMIE STAYS!!
Witney United have been further boosted by the news that Jamie Mills has followed his brother Jon-Paul Mills in signing for the club for the forthcoming season.
Jamie who signed last season from Hungerford Town made himself a regular in the starting line-up near the end of the season making 11 starts and 1 substitute appearance with those numbers only restricted due to the fact he was cup-tied in many competitions.
Andy Lyne was pleased that Mills had decided to remain with the club and spoke with delight at the news.
"Jamie is a quality player who has always done very well for me both here at United and also when I had him as a player at Wantage Town. I am delighted he is staying with us as in my opinion he is the best in the division at what he does"
22.06.08 FORMER CANARY SWOOPS IN FOR UNITED!!
Witney United have completed the signing of former Norwich City striker Ben Thompson from Ridgeons League side Wroxham.
24 year old Thompson spent 7 seasons with the Canaries before joining Wroxham and In 66 starts with The Yachtsmen he netted 42 goals. This spell included lifting the Ridgeons League Premier Division title in 2006/07 and the Norfolk Senior Cup in 2007-08.
Commenting on the capture Manager Andy Lyne said “ Ben has a great pedigree, he’s a hard working and unselfish striker who has good hold up play and brings others in to the game, he also has an excellent goal scoring record. He and his partner have moved to this area to work and we are delighted to have got him onboard”.
Following on from the signing of contracts by Jon-Paul Mills, Dean Smith and Andrew Younie we will bring you more signing news over the coming weeks
18.06.08 UNITED WRAP UP STADIUM SPONSOR DEAL!!
Witney United Football Club are delighted to announce the news that we have signed a significant sponsorship deal with local company Polythene UK Ltd.
The Witney based company have come to an agreement to sponsor the stadium for the next two seasons with the ground changing its name from “Marriotts Stadium” to the “The Polythene UK Stadium”.
It is seen as further evidence that United are trying to forge closer links with both local businesses and the community and chairman Steve Lake was naturally delighted with the deal
“This is a significant sponsorship deal for a club of our size with a Witney based business that have a genuine interest in supporting their local club. The tie up with Polythene UK is one I am sure that will benefit both parties equally and one we hope is the start of more local businesses backing their local club”
Polythene UK are a highly successful company with over 100 years combined experience in the packaging industry offering all types of packaging from polythene films and bags to boxes and tape either printed or unprinted.
Managing Director James Woollard (pictured with United chairman Steve Lake) was equally delighted with the tie-up.
“We at Polythene UK Ltd are delighted to have closed this deal with Witney United and are proud to be associated with our local club. There is no better way to do this from our point of view than sponsoring the stadium and we wish United every luck for the forthcoming season”
14.06.08 TWO MORE MAKE IT THE CONTRACT THREE!!
Witney United have committed a further two of their players to contract with the news that defender Dean Smith(below right)and striker Andrew Younie(left) have followed in the footsteps of Jon-Paul Mills in signing for the forthcoming season.
The club feels that this sends out a positive message to its supporters regarding their intent to build upon their progress of the last few seasons, which culminated in their highest ever finish in the league last season when United ended 4th in the Hellenic Premier.
Manager Andy Lyne didnt hide his delight as he spoke of the news that the duo had put pen to paper.
"Each of these players has earned themselves a contract with the consistency of their performances. Deano is a terrific and highly versatile player with great recovery pace. Younie simply lights the place up with his movement, touch and vision, He has great potential and is one of the cleverest forwards I have ever worked with”
Remember the website is the first place for confirmed news of who signs on the dotted line for United throughout the Summer.
12.06.08 MILLS SIGNS ON THE DOTTED LINE!!
Jon-Paul Mills has become Witney United’s first ever contracted player after agreeing terms for the forthcoming season this week.
The former Oxford United, Southampton, Chippenham Town and Swindon Supermarine midfielder was a major influence for United last season and played a big part in their best ever Hellenic League Premier Division finish scoring 8 goals in 23 appearances.
Manager Andy Lyne, who has worked previously with Mills at both Wantage Town and Didcot Town said of the signing.
“For me JP is the most complete midfield player in the league and this represents a significant bit of business for the club. Our plans for next season are going well and getting a commitment from such an influential player at this early stage is a massive boost”
Supporters were equally pleased by the news and a spokesman for Supporters Club 1885 said of the signing "There is no two ways about it JP Mills was one of the key factors in our excellent run last season and to get him confirmed at such an early stage as a United player for next season is brilliant news"

06.06.08 uNITED FANS ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!
With the season done and dusted the usual facts and figures come out and one statistic to warm United fans is yet again we were the best supported club in the Hellenic League.
It is the 2nd year running we have topped the averages and we were one of only two clubs who had an average over 100 for the season.
In the Hellenic Premier we ran out top with an average crowd of 135 and were followed in 2nd place by Highworth Town who averaged 91 and then Shrivenham with 83. Eventual league champions North Leigh pulled in an average crowd of 59 for the season boosted by the 250 plus gate when United visited.
In Division One West it was Trowbridge Town who topped the charts with an average of 112 followed by Winterbourne United with 76 and Tytherington Rocks with 73.
In Division One East it was Binfield with an average of 75 followed by Chalfont Wasps with 67 and then Wokingham & Emmbrook with 62.
United manager Andy Lyne was quick to praise the United following for their support both home and away following the news.
"Everyone knows we have the best support base in the league and to drop below three figures only once last season was brilliant.
Credit to Andrew Magnay for all the work he does in the community to boost attendances but we also enjoy a hard core support that many clubs can only dream of.
There is no doubt that our support has lifted us on many occassions both home and away. The late and hard earned wins at AFC Wallingford and Hook Norton for instance were as much down to the travelling support as they were the players. There is nothing better than running out at places such as Harrow Hill (midweek), Lydney Town and Pegasus Juniors and know that the "Yellow Army" are there in numbers.
On top of that the players are made aware when they have made the support proud. The receptions when the players left the field at North Leigh and at home to Almondsbury Town were tremendous.
The players and management know how lucky we are to enjoy such a following and from my perspective it certainly helps when trying to get players to the club"

03.06.08 UNITED OFF TO FACE THE TIGERS!!
United's preparations for the new season continued to make progress today as a difficult trip to face Gloucester City was announced.
The game will take place on Monday 21st July and will be played at Cirencester Town's ground which will be the home of The Tigers for the forthcoming campaign.
Gloucester despite the trials and tribulations of losing the use of their ground due to last Summer's floods had an excellent season in the Southern Premier Division and only missed out on the play-offs by a solitary point and will be hoping to push on again this season.
This will no doubt be a very tough test for United also coming just two days after their opening game of the build up when they face Didcot Town on the 19th July.
30.05.08 UNITED HEAD FOR THE MONEYFIELDS!!
United can announce that their pre-season is continuing to take shape with the news that we will travel to face Wessex League side Moneyfields FC on Saturday 2nd August.
The Hampshire based side are a strong outfit finishing 7th in the league last year and only losing out 1-0 to Wimborne Town in the League Cup Final.
With the Hellenic Premier season beginning in the week commencing Monday 11th August it is possible that this will be United's last warm up match before the new season.
Keep an eye on the website over the next few days when we hope to confirm more pre-season friendly news.

25.05.08 DATE WITH THE RAILWAYMEN!!
United can today confirm they have arranged their latest pre-season friendly with the news that Southern League side Didcot Town will be visitors to Marriotts Stadium.
Didcot are fresh off the back off an excellent season only missing out in the play-offs to Oxford City on penalties after finishing 3rd in the league.
There is no doubt that the forthcoming season will see The Railwaymen amongst the favourites to gain promotion to the Southern Premier.
We of course met at the start of last season when an impressive performance by United saw them gain a creditable 2-2 draw at the nPower Loop Meadow.
The game will take place on Saturday 19th July at Marriotts Stadium with a 3-00pm kick off.
21.05.08 WUFC TO MEET WUFC!!
United have announced the latest game in their preparations for the new season when they will travel to Spartan South Midlands League side Winslow United.
The game will take place on Tuesday 29th July at Winslow in the first ever meeting between the two clubs.]
Winslow had a troubled season last year in Division One of the South Midlands League and actually finished in the bottom two and will no doubt be awaiting confirmation of relegation to the 2nd Division.
United can also confirm that for the first time since their formation they will be entering the annual Jim Newman Memorial Trophy which is held at Clanfield FC. As soon as we have news of dates and the first round draw we will let you know.
20.05.08 hOWARD COWLEY EXCLUSIVE!!
Last week saw United appoint a new assistant manager in Howard Cowley who is a new name to most United supporters so the website caught up with the new man to find out more.
Needless to say following a warm welcome to United the first question on the agenda was how did the opportunity to join the Blanketmen come about.
"I met Andy Lyne a few years back when I was manager of Welwyn Garden City and we beat Oxford City 3-1 in the FA Vase and he was very gracious in defeat even buying the drinks afterwards! We then met later on in the season in the league when we drew 2-2 and Lyner was dancing down the touchline as they equalised in the 96th minute. We have kept in touch ever since, sharing our ideas and thoughts on the game, so when the opportunity to work alongside him came up it seemed the natural progression. I am delighted to be joining Witney, working with a manager for whom I have a lot of respect and a group of talented players"
Howard actually saw United up close twice last season and that is another of the reasons he couldnt turn the chance down.
"I actually brought Welwyn to Witney for a pre-season friendly at the start of last season which we drew 1-1 but both sides have changed considerably since then. I watched a league game later in the season and was impressed with the attitude and the desire of the side as well as their ability. I know Andy wants to kick on from the 4th placed finish of this season and as long as the playing squad are committed there has to be every chance. Certainly thats the driving factor behind me joining Witney to do everything I can to support Andy in the quest for promotion"
Having been manager for the last number of seasons would becoming Assistant Manager mean any difficulties in adapting to being a Number 2.
"I have always felt that managing is for more than one person, and that people are often at their best when operating in tandem. Thats the way I have always worked whether as a manager or an assistant so there are no problems for me on that score. There is always a lot to deal with on and off the pitch so teamwork is the key"
Finally Howard took the bull by the horns and sent out a message to the United fans ahead of the job beginning in earnest.
"Football is all about winning, winning in style is even better. Fans want points on the board exactly the same as Managers and Players and coaches etc. That's all we want and needless to say we will be hell bent on doing so. Personally I am looking forward to pre-season already!!"
The website would like to thank Howard for his time with this interview and needless to say keep a look out here over the Summer as we will aim to get interviews with any players old or new.
20.05.08 YOUTH END SEASON IN DEFEAT!!
United's youngsters produced another improved performance as they closed out their Allied Counties season but went down to eventual runners-up Abingdon United.
Having gained a creditable draw against North Leigh last week United performed well again but were beaten by goals either side of the break.
18.05.08 UNITED SET UP REBELS DATE!!
With the dust barely settled upon United's season things are already looking towards the new season and with that comes the announcement of the first pre-season friendly.
United will be hosting Southern League South & West Division side Slough Town at Marriotts Stadium on Saturday 26th July with a 3-00pm kick off.
The Rebels had a traumatic season last year finishing in the relegation places but they were saved following the demise of Halifax Town further up the ladder meaning that following a re-shuffle Slough remain in the Southern League.
Despite those trials and tribulations Slough are still regarded as a big name in non-league football a fact reinforced by an average gate of 218 despite relegation and bettered by only 4 clubs in their league.
17.05.08 YOUNGSTERS EARN SPIRITED POINT!!
United's youngsters put a tough season behind them on Thursday night when they grafted to earn an excellent draw against local rivals North Leigh.
North Leigh had only missed out on the title by a small margin and were expected to win comfortably but United's youngsters showed great heart and deserved more than the 2-2 draw they earned.
The goals for United came from Will Bridgewater and Lewis Stayte.
14.05.08 HOWARDS WAY AS COWLEY SAILS IN!!
Witney United can today announce they have appointed the vastly experienced Howard Cowley as their new assistant manager. Last season Cowley was manager of Welwyn Garden City where he’s been for the last three seasons. He has also coached/managed at Harrow Borough, Tring Town, Berkhamstead Town, Hemel Hempstead Town and Harpenden Town.
Cowley guided Welwyn to their best ever performances in the F A Cup and F A Vase, as well as master minding a 19 game unbeaten run.
During his time with “The Citizens” three Welwyn players were offered full-time professional contracts with Barnet, Joe Devera, Nick Brindley and Harry Hunt, each aged 19. Devera going on to command a regular spot in the Bee’s line-up and this season being voted player of the season.
A fourth, 17-year-old Luke Medley, signed pro forms for North London giants Tottenham before joining Bradford City.
Commenting upon the appointment Witney manager Andy Lyne said,
“ Howard and myself have stayed in touch from my time at Oxford City in the SSML. He is very astute, one of the games innovative thinkers and someone who has amassed vast experience at a variety of levels. He will bring fresh ideas and input to the club and hopefully help us to kick on yet further”.
“Replacing Andy Leach has proved a nigh on impossible task as he is truly a one off. I am extremely sad that he has had to call it a day as we had a great working relationship. I do feel though, that by bringing someone in from outside the Oxfordshire area it will stimulate both me and the players and I would expect Howard, with his connections within the professional and non league game, to help me strengthen our squad.”
The website hope to have an exclusive interview with Howard Cowley in the next week or so to discuss his arrival at United.
13.05.08 YOUTH SUFFER SEVEN GOAL DEFEAT!!
United suffered a heavy defeat last night at the hands of Aylesbury United as their difficult season in the Allied Counties North Division draws near its end.
Trailing 3-0 at the break they were unable to make any inroads and further goals saw United crash 7-0.
07.05.08 YOUTH GAMES RE-ARRANGED!!
If you are missing your football following the end of the season for the First Team then look no further as United's Under 18s have two games coming up next week.
On Monday 12th April they will entertain Aylesbury United at Marriotts Stadium with a 7-45pm kick off. Then on Thursday 15th April they will host local rivals North Leigh on the training pitch at Marriotts Stadium with a 6-15pm kick off.
Entrance fee for both matches will be just £1 per person so why not come along and watch the youngsters complete their league season.
04.05.08 IGNITION OFF TO BLAZING START!!
The "full-up" signs went up at Ignition on Friday night as the re-launched function room at United got off to a terrific start.
Having been re-decorated inside the club was raring to go and was rewarded with a full house and over 150 people turned away from its opening night.
Club manager Bob Haydon was delighted with the start "It was great to see the place full up and the night passed without a hint of trouble. We had a visit from the local police who were delighted with how the event was being run so all in all very positive beginning"
02.05.08 pROGRAMME WINS PREMIER AWARD!!
Following on from the team having its highest ever finish in the Hellenic League since United were formed and the Reserves finishing runners-up it is the turn of the United programme to be in the honours.
The annual programme awards have taken place and we are very proud to announce that the Witney United programme has won the award for the Hellenic Premier Division.
Right across the Hellenic League we came an admirable 4th place with only Wootton Bassett Town, Bisley Sports and Binfield adjudged to have produced better.
Congratulations to programme editor Rich Wickson for his time and effort and to all those who have contributed over the course of the season.
The Under 18's suffered heartbreak last night as despite a much improved performance they went down 5-2 at Milton United. Two goals from Jamie Wyatt had given United hope but two late goals gave the scoreline a harsh look.
